Filling middle seats nearly doubles airline passenger risk of catching COVID-19, says MIT researcher
Risk of dying from COVID-19 as a result of flying are higher than plane crash risk, according to a statistical model compiled by MIT scholar Arnold Barnett. Airlines could minimize that risk by leaving open the middle seat, but airlines including United and American refuse to do so. Plans for a post-COVID-19 world, moreover, suggest flights may be even more crowded.
